ARMED FORCES
EMERGENCY SERVICES
(AFES)

For our military troops worldwide, the American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Service provides an invaluable humanitarian, communication and service link.

Emergency Communication
Your American Red Cross is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to provide Emergency Communication between service members and their families. In the event of a sickness, death or a new birth in a service member's family, the local American Red Cross is the first call the family needs to make. We verify the situation, relay the information, along with the request, if there is one, for emergency leave to the service member's command. Although we provide the necessary information to the service member's commanding officer, it is ultimately the commanding officer's decision whether or not to grant leave. It is important to note that American Red Cross verification can be a determining factor for Commanding Officers in their decision to grant emergency leave to a service member.

Health and Welfare Inquiries
Regular communication between service members and their families is ordinarily not a problem. But sometimes, a long time with no contact can become worrisome to a service member or his/her family. In this situation, the American Red Cross can use its worldwide communication network to verify all is okay. Just contact your local American Red Cross unit with your concern, and we will help. With American Red Cross Armed Forces Emergency Services you are never out of touch, around the clock, around the world.

Before you call
When you call the Armed Forces Emergency Services, you will need as much of the following information as possible. It is advised that a service member's family keep as much of the data needed in a convenient place, such as an address book.

  • Services member's full name
  • Military rank
  • Social security number (very important)
  • Full mailing address
  • The full name of the person involved in the emergency
  • That person's relationship with the service member
  • The name, phone number and relationship of the person requesting the presence of the service member
  • The name of the attending doctor or funeral home location of the affected family member
  • A phone number to contact either the doctor or funeral home
